Tait Champion, 28 Jul 2007

A very lean-looking Gregor Tait led from the start of the 100m backstroke (26.91 split) for a 55.56sec victory, just over half a second outside best, with newly crowned European junior champion, Marco Loughran, pressing hard for a 55.69 silver medal. The bronze went to Matthew Clay of Swansea, in 55.80.

Kate Haywood, coached by Ben Titley, took the 100m breaststroke in 1:08.19, ahead of CES Kirsty Balfour, the world silver medallist over 200m and racing for the first time since Melbourne 2007, second in 1:09.74. ahead of Lowri Tynan, of Wrexham, on 1:10.53.

Fred Vergnoux, Balfour's coach in Edinburgh, explained his charge's absence on the race scene: beyond niggles to a shoulder and an abdominal muscle, Balfour was in the midst of the most intensive training summer of her career. The bigger test would come at the Japan International at Chiba in late August.

In the men 100m breaststroke the crown went to Darren Mew, of Bath, 1:01.27, with James Gibson second in 1:01.51 and Kris Gilchrist, a 200m specialist from CES, setting a Scottish record for third in 1:01.65.
